Religion Memories

“No, I don’t have to eat carrots – God will eat them for me”, quoted our neighbor girl many years ago. After a lot of interpretation and thought of her daughter’s statement, Mary Ann’s mother finally decided it must have been from her Sunday School teachers quote “God careth for you.”

We all attended Sunday School faithfully in the mid-west and listened attentively to our teachers.

Religion always played a big part in our home. At meal time, we always said “God is great, God is good. Let us thank him for our food.” At bed time we always kneeled and repeated “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the lord my soul will keep.”

As we grew up, we attended Jr. Church after Sunday School – which was timed at regular church time. It was patterned after the weekly church service for our younger lives.

Two weeks during the Summer Bible School was offered. My biggest memory of this was the Minister taking a raw egg in a clear container and poured what he said was alcohol over the raw egg. The egg sizzled and fell apart! Wow! What a lesson on how alcohol affects your brain!!!

Easter was always a special Sunday. My mother saw to it that we had new clothes to wear.

During my family’s growth in Pleasantville, N.Y., Easter services were held on Flag Hill at the break of dawn. It was surprising how many people (young and old) attended this service. My fondest recollection of one Easter when the young man who always brought his trumpet and would open the service with a loud blowing of the trumpet. This year Steve did not appear. So the Minister announced, “Christ has risen, but Steve has not!” – then continued his sermon!

Another Pleasantville Easter I recall I had a lovely mink stole to wear to church service. While walking home, my neighbor was following me and remarked, “Elsie I see you have one of those “ass-freezers” now!!” Needless to say my stole was always referred to as my “ass-freezer”!!

Maybe I’ve always taken my religion lightly – but it has always been a big part in my life and still is. It has helped me through many serious times in my life and will continue to do so.
